Before this trip I read Anthony Doerr's Four Season in Rome. It describes Doerr's experience in the city and the connection he and his family made with the people who lived here. He would read poetry and philosophy from greats that came before him such as Dante, Keats who each had their own experience in Rome. Doerr had his own unique experience while in the historic city that made him feel at home. He had recently had twins and wanted them to see all of the city and what it had to offer. For example he took them to the Pantheon in December to wait for snow to fall through the oculus. He attended the vigil of dying Pope John Paul II and visited all the piazzas, temples, and ancient cisterns around the city. He would become close with the locals and listen to their stories of what it was like growing up in such a historic and meaningful city. He wanted to share his story so someone like myself can try and find the same meaning and be impacted by Rome in my own way.

Although he was in Rome for a much longer time than I will be, I believe I can get a similar impact out of the city. First of all, i have been here for about 24 hours and the food has definitely left a mark that I will never forget. The deep history of the city will be meaningful to see because all that i have learned in school will be right in front of me. Although I am not catholic, going to the Vatican will allow me to see the importance of religion and open my mind to new ideas and beliefs.

I know Rome will have a deep impact on me, and I can't wait to share it with all of you.
